Opportunity
By Barb Piscopo
I came to Lorain a little over six years ago because I needed a job. That was it, plain and simple.
What was it that captured my heart? Because that is why I stayed.
I fell in love with Lorain… Its people – their honesty, their passion for their city, their strong sense of place.
I fell in love with the diversity that is Lorain… So many people from different backgrounds with unique stories all here to make their contribution.
I fell in love with the water – the lake and the river and how they can be a focal point for Lorain’s renewal in leisure and nature, lifestyle and entertainment.
I could say that I fell in love with the possibilities that this city holds – for historic preservation, for community engagement, and collaboration.
As Toni Morrison said, “From my point of view, your life is already a miracle of chance waiting for you to shape its destiny.”

I took this opportunity because I needed a job. I stay because I love a challenge, and it is an honor to work with individuals who want to make a difference in their community.
I do what I do every day because of you. I want you to be caught up in a love for Lorain just as I have, and I want you to be engaged in the city that you call home in a way that brings you joy, that stokes your passion, and that makes a positive difference in your community. I want you to respect the past of this city that is marked by grit, hard work, and determination. Respect this city marked by resilience and hope for a better tomorrow. Respect this city marked by honesty and integrity and a strong respect for the truth and the dignity of each human being – no matter their race, ethnicity, their creed, or their sexual orientation.
I want you to realize that the inheritance you claim as a resident of Lorain – while it is your right – is also your responsibility, and it can only survive if you cherish it and work every day to keep it alive.
Please support the mission of Lorain Proud by volunteering your time or becoming a financial patron.
At the end of the day, we are all “LorainProud”!
